From about the age of 11, I also worked for my uncles in the summer, assisting with the hay harvest by driving a team or a tractor on steel lugs with a hay loader attached to the wagon. I would pull the wagon from the field to the barn, or pull the hay from the wagon up into the mow.
When I was 12, my father purchased a set of Firestone® wheels and axles for my use in designing and constructing a soap box racer. This project kept me busy from early spring till August. Akron, Ohio was home of the Soap Box Derby®, at Derby Downs, adjacent to the Rubber Bowl on the east side of the Akron Airport. I won only my first heat, but the total experience was fun, and the awards dinner at the Mayflower Hotel was a very special treat for a 12-year-old country boy.
